Check it out. Psalm 132 predicts that Christ would be born during the feast of Tabernacles.
David starts off by saying that he will not rest until he has found a Tabernacle for the Lord.
In verse six he says, "Lo, we heard of it at Ephratah; we found it in the fields of the woods." Ephratah is the ancient name of Bethlehem because Ephrat founded the city.
David then goes on to speak of the Messiah coming through his blood line, and verse 17 specifically speaks of the birth of Christ. "There (in Ephratah and Zion) will I make the horn of David to "bud: I have ordainded a lamp for mine anointed... upon Himself shall His crown flourish."
Now if Christ is the branch of Jesse or David, then the budding of the branch is His birth. Remember that Ephratah was also used as the name for the area around Jerusalem or Northern Judah, and Zion is also used metaphorically as a place for worship, or an inner spiritual experience. So there is a little play room here as there always is in prophecy. It is a parable, a play on words.
"The fields of the woods" (verse 6) is a reference to the fact that Christ would be born in a cattle shelter (succoth), used to shelter sheep (also called cattle in the Old Testament). Hence, when the angel told the shepherds that "...Unto you is born this day a Saviour...and...you shall find the baby wrapped in swaddling clothes (rags) and lying in a cattle stall." He was saying that they would find the baby in their masters sheep pen. For he did say, "Unto you..." meaning "In your house."
Remember that before David was a King in Jerusalem, he was a shepherd in Bethlehem and probably spent many a night sleeping in one of these shelters as he tended his fathers sheep.
Nothing in the Gospels says the inn keeper had mercy on them and gave them his barn to use. That is an unfounded tradition started by Constantines Mother who went to Bethlehem and founded a Church above the "traditional site of the "manger." It is therefore about as reliable as the idea that there were three wisemen based on the three gifts, or that they were from three seperate countries based on the myth that there was three of them.
In fact, the picture we have is really Joseph and Mary finding no place in Bethlehem, and his wife is ready to birth, a very private moment that he does not wish to share with strangers. Women in other cultures often have their own babies without the help of midwives so we need not think this strange. He goes to outskirts on the edge of town looking for a somewhat more private place, but no one will help them.
In desperation, he spies a succoth deserted, for the sheep are in the pasture. There, the Saviour of the world is born, rejected of men before His birth. Notice that the angel didn't give the shepherds any directions. This is because when they went back to Bethlehem to put the sheep in the stall and to seek the baby, there was Mary and Joseph in their sheep pen. They must have been in awe. -----
